Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the county boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a heritage extending back to Roman times, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins picked up nearby offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and relics picked up show that they were settling the region almost certainly since the sixth century. The village existing then wasn't cited until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a substantially bigger area than just the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be put on prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the ensuing decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's seen greater development in recent times.
