Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated close to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins picked up in close proximity give proof of this. The early Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market in about the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered mean that they were inhabiting the area most probably since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then isn't observed till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a substantially wider area than just the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could quite possibly have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't added before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger over the ensuing generations and the construction of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town which has seen improved development in the recent past.
