Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a historical past going back to the Roman period, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins stumbled on in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities picked up show that they were residing in the neighbourhood most likely since the sixth century. The village as it was was not remarked upon till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a much bigger area than just the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name may well have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't inserted until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the coming generations and the building of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has witnessed accelerated development in recent years.
