Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a story going back to Roman days, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is situated very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins picked up in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered suggest that they were inhabiting the locale in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The village as such is not described until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a substantially greater area compared to the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may very well have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't applied up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the coming generations and the establishing of of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town that's seen accelerated development in the last few years.
