Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the era of the Romans, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coins uncovered in the area offer evidence of this. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the local area very likely from the 6th Century. The commune as it was then wasn't cited till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a significantly greater area than just the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not added on prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the ensuing decades and the building of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that's seen increased development in the past several years.
