Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history extending back to Roman days, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lays very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage stumbled upon near by offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities discovered reveal that they were staying in the neighbourhood more than likely from the 6th Century. The village existing at this time was not described till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a lot greater area compared to the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not added on until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
