Positioned within the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the border between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to the era of the Romans, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coins picked up in close proximity offer evidence of this. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood probably from the sixth century. The commune as such is not remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a substantially greater area than simply the town itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not applied before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the succeeding generations and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town that's seen improved development in recent years.
