The old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics discovered indicate that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood quite possibly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was wasn't reported till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a significantly wider area than simply the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be inserted up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger through the succeeding decades and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop.
