Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage picked up near by show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at this time.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a way larger area compared to the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name may possibly have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be applied prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
