Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a story harping back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is located very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coins unearthed near by show evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who used the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics uncovered show that they were settling the neighbourhood in all likelihood since the sixth century. The commune as such isn't mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a far larger area compared to the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added on before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the ensuing years and the development of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's witnessed greater development in the last few years.
