Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the era of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there had been settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity show proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced a market in around the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered show that they were settling the neighbourhood quite likely from the sixth century. The village as such was not cited till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a far larger area than just the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name may perhaps have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get put in prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
