Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a history extending back to the Roman era, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it lays near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical relics and coins stumbled on in the area give proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were settling the local area most likely since the sixth century. The village as it was wasn't remarked upon until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a much greater area than simply the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be added on prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the following years and the coming of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a blooming market town which has witnessed improved development in the recent past.
