Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a history going back to Roman days, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays next to the Chilterns and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coins stumbled on in close proximity show proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon indicate that they were settling the vicinity most probably from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then wasn't reported until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a considerably bigger area than merely the town alone, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not appended until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the succeeding years and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has witnessed increased development in recent times.
