Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located close to the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coins stumbled upon in the area give evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon suggest that they were settling the locale in all probability since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time wasn't documented until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a much wider area compared to the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't included up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the following decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that's seen accelerated development in current times.
