Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage going back to the Roman era, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated next to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage unearthed in the area give proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on suggest that they were settling the area perhaps since the sixth century. The village existing then was not remarked upon until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a significantly larger area than only the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get put on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the coming generations and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's seen increased development in the recent past.
