Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to the Roman period, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is located close to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins stumbled upon in the area offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, came through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in about the tenth century, and antiquities picked up show that they were inhabiting the area very likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time was not cited till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a much wider area than only the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could very well have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get included till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the coming decades and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town which has witnessed improved development in recent times.
