Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is near the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a historical past stretching back to the Roman era, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is found close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage picked up nearby give proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts found show that they were residing in the vicinity probably from the 6th Century. The commune as such is not described until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a way larger area than just the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be applied before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the following generations and the development of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has seen increased development in recent times.
