Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the boundary between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a history stretching back to Roman days, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage picked up in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced a market during the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were settling the region almost certainly from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was wasn't described till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a considerably larger area than simply the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger over the following years and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that's seen improved development in the last few years.
