Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the Roman period, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located near the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old relics and coins found in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and relics picked up imply that they were residing in the neighbourhood probably from the 6th Century. The village as it was is not referred to till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a lot bigger area than just the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't applied before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger over the coming years and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town which has seen accelerated development in the last few years.
