Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage stumbled on in the area give evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon suggest that they were residing in the area probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as such is not listed until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a way greater area than just the town itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not included before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
