Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the Roman period, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays very close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins found in the area show evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market during the 10th Century, and relics stumbled on show that they were residing in the region possibly from the sixth century. The settlement as it was was not mentioned until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a substantially greater area than just the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't appended up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the coming years and the coming of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's witnessed increased development in current times.
