Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to Roman days, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coinage unearthed nearby give proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who created the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on suggest that they were residing in the locale very likely since the 6th Century. The village as it was wasn't described until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a substantially wider area than only the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not added on till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the succeeding decades and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town that's witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
