Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it can be found near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old relics and coins stumbled on in the area offer evidence of this. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and relics stumbled on show that they were settling the region more than likely since the sixth century. The village as such isn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a considerably greater area than just the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could very well have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be included until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger through the following generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town that has seen improved development in the recent past.
