Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the border in between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a story harping back to Roman times, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is found close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical relics and coins discovered in close proximity give proof of this. The olden Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts found imply that they were residing in the region most likely from the sixth century. The village as such isn't observed until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a way larger area than just the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't included until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the succeeding decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a growing market town that's seen greater development in recent years.
