Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a historical past going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins picked up in close proximity show evidence of this. The early Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who introduced a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics picked up indicate that they were staying in the neighbourhood most probably since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time is not cited till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a substantially greater area than only the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not added till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the following decades and the construction of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
