Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a heritage going back to the times of the Romans, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins unearthed in close proximity offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the local area perhaps from the sixth century. The village as such isn't documented until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a substantially wider area compared to the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be included up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger throughout the following decades and the arrival of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that's seen greater development in the past few years.
