Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to Roman times, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it lays next to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage unearthed nearby offer evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the locale quite likely since the sixth century. The village as it was then wasn't listed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a far wider area than just the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be added on before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the ensuing decades and the building of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town which has witnessed greater development in current times.
