Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the times of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located next to the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coinage stumbled on nearby give proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were dwelling in the vicinity quite likely from the sixth century. The village existing at this time was not observed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a way bigger area than only the town alone, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not applied until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing over the following decades and the appearance of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town which has seen accelerated development in the recent past.
