Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a historical past stretching back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays very close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins picked up in the area give proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market during the tenth century, and artifacts discovered show that they were dwelling in the region in all likelihood from the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't documented till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a considerably larger area than simply the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not included up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the following decades and the establishing of of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a flourishing market town that has seen increased development in recent years.
