Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the border between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the Roman period, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coins stumbled upon near by show evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who introduced the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood most probably since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then isn't mentioned until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a significantly bigger area than only the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't added before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the coming decades and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has seen accelerated development in the past few decades.
