Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history going back to Roman times, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it can be found near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coins stumbled upon in the area give evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who created a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were inhabiting the vicinity perhaps since the sixth century. The settlement as it was isn't listed till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a far greater area than simply the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be put in till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding through the ensuing generations and the coming of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town that has seen accelerated development in current times.
