Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a story harping back to the Roman era, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage found nearby offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used a market in around the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were living in the region in all probability since the 6th Century. The village existing at that time wasn't observed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a significantly wider area than just the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could quite possibly have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing during the succeeding decades and the coming of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that has seen accelerated development in the past several years.
