Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a past going back to Roman days, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is located very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage uncovered in the area show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the 10th Century, and relics discovered indicate that they were residing in the area very likely from the sixth century. The village existing at that time isn't referred to till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a way greater area than merely the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not applied till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the succeeding generations and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prosperous market town that has witnessed improved development in the last few years.
