Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to the Roman era, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it sits close to the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic relics and coins discovered nearby show evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in about the tenth century, and relics stumbled on show that they were settling the local area undoubtedly from the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time isn't remarked upon until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a significantly wider area than simply the town by itself, and included the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name could possibly have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be added before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the following generations and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town that's witnessed increased development in the recent past.
