Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to 37,000 and a history going back to Roman days, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage stumbled upon nearby show evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were residing in the neighbourhood possibly since the 6th Century. The commune existing at that time was not referred to till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a way larger area compared to the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the following years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has seen greater development in the past several years.
