Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the border in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about 37,000 and a history harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it is situated near the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage found in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon mean that they were residing in the area more than likely since the sixth century. The village as it was then is not documented until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a considerably greater area than merely the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name may have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be included before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the following years and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town which has witnessed improved development in the recent past.
