Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins uncovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The age old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place in around the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood in all likelihood since the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not reported till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a lot larger area than merely the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be added on prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
