Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage stumbled on near by show proof of this. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The commune existing then is not listed until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a way wider area than only the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not appended up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
