Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to Roman times, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated near the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins stumbled on nearby show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics discovered show that they were residing in the locale perhaps since the sixth century. The village existing then was not referred to till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a much greater area than just the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't inserted till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the following decades and the building of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town which has seen greater development in modern times.
