Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a history stretching back to Roman times, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there had been settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins found near by show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who used a market during the tenth century, and relics unearthed mean that they were settling the vicinity almost certainly from the sixth century. The settlement as such is not reported till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a significantly bigger area compared to the town itself, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name will probably have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't included before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the coming years and the construction of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that's seen greater development in the past few years.
