Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a past extending back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage stumbled upon near by offer evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts found suggest that they were settling the region very likely since the 6th Century. The commune existing then wasn't described until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a way greater area than just the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get put in up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger through the coming years and the building of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that's seen greater development in current times.
