Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a heritage going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it stands near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins found nearby show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place during the tenth century, and relics discovered suggest that they were staying in the neighbourhood in all likelihood since the sixth century. The village existing then isn't referred to until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a much bigger area than merely the town alone, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be inserted prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger during the following generations and the coming of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has witnessed greater development in the past few decades.
