Found in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about 37,000 and a historical past extending back to Roman days, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage uncovered in the area give evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in around the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were settling the locale probably from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then was not discussed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a much bigger area than only the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be added on up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the ensuing decades and the development of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop.
