Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is located near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical relics and coins picked up in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts found suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood quite possibly since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't observed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a much bigger area than just the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put on prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the succeeding generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town that's seen greater development in the last few years.
