Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to Roman days, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands near the Chilterns and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage discovered nearby offer evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who created the market place during the tenth century, and relics discovered suggest that they were residing in the vicinity probably from the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a lot greater area than merely the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not added on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the succeeding decades and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town that has witnessed improved development in current times.
