Located in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the Roman period, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits very close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage uncovered in the area offer evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered imply that they were residing in the area quite likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was wasn't documented till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a substantially bigger area than simply the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't put on before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it crucial to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
