Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity show proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place in around the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on suggest that they were inhabiting the area possibly from the 6th Century. The village existing then is not discussed until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a way bigger area than simply the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be added on up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the coming years and the building of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a flourishing market town that has witnessed increased development in the last few years.
