Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to the Roman period, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it is placed next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage picked up nearby give proof of this. The historical Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were residing in the locale probably from the 6th Century. The village as it was was not listed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a significantly larger area than merely the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could very well have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be applied till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the coming decades and the development of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop.
