Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the Roman period, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is situated very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins uncovered in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who introduced a market during the tenth century, and relics uncovered show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood in all likelihood since the sixth century. The village existing then isn't reported until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a significantly bigger area than simply the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be appended prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
