Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to Roman days, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located near the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage found in the area show evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were dwelling in the vicinity probably since the sixth century. The commune existing at this time is not documented until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a significantly bigger area than only the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get added on before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the following years and the arrival of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town that has seen improved development in the recent past.
