Positioned within the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage going back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins uncovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The early Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were settling the vicinity quite possibly from the sixth century. The settlement existing then wasn't remarked upon until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a way bigger area than just the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may likely have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not inserted before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the following decades and the building of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town which has seen improved development in the past several years.
