Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the Roman era, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it can be found near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins unearthed in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, went through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts found show that they were inhabiting the local area most likely since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time is not referred to till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a much bigger area compared to the town alone, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be inserted up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing throughout the ensuing years and the building of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past few decades.
