Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it can be found very close to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old artifacts and coins uncovered nearby offer proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market in about the tenth century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were staying in the neighbourhood probably since the 6th Century. The commune existing at that time is not referred to till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a considerably larger area than merely the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be included before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the succeeding years and the arrival of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town that's seen greater development in modern times.
