Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a past extending back to the era of the Romans, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits near to the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old relics and coins uncovered in the area give proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered mean that they were staying in the area perhaps since the 6th Century. The village as such isn't discussed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a considerably larger area than only the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name may have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not applied till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the following years and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town that's witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
