Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to Roman days, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays close to the Chilterns and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins discovered nearby show proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on suggest that they were staying in the area almost certainly since the sixth century. The village existing at that time isn't referred to until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a considerably bigger area compared to the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be inserted up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the following generations and the coming of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's witnessed accelerated development in current times.
