Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historic past going back to the Roman era, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it sits close to the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins stumbled on in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who used the market place during the 10th Century, and relics found show that they were living in the local area most probably from the 6th Century. The village as it was is not remarked upon till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a substantially larger area than simply the town alone, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get added on till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the succeeding years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has seen greater development in the past few years.
