Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman era, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it lays near the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area give evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, came through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities found suggest that they were settling the area most likely from the 6th Century. The village existing then is not listed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a significantly greater area compared to the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may very well have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be put in up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger through the coming generations and the construction of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town which has seen improved development in recent times.
