Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a past harping back to the Roman period, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed near to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early relics and coinage picked up nearby show evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced a market in around the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on suggest that they were residing in the vicinity probably from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then wasn't observed until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a substantially bigger area than simply the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't inserted prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the following years and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town that has seen improved development in the recent past.
