The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic relics and coins stumbled upon nearby offer evidence of this. The old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled upon suggest that they were inhabiting the area more than likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time is not discussed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a far wider area than merely the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not added on before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
