Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the times of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lays close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage stumbled on in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood in all probability since the sixth century. The commune as it was was not mentioned till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a far larger area compared to the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not included before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the succeeding decades and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a growing market town that has seen accelerated development in the past several years.
