Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a past stretching back to Roman times, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies near to the Chilterns and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old relics and coins found nearby offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were residing in the area most likely since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then is not documented until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a much bigger area compared to the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be included up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing during the ensuing decades and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has seen improved development in the recent past.
