Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the border betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the times of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it stands very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coins discovered nearby offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed indicate that they were settling the locale in all probability since the 6th Century. The village existing at this time isn't observed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a way larger area than just the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't put in till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the coming decades and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that has witnessed greater development in the past few decades.
