Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated near to the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins found in the area offer proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced a market during the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon reveal that they were settling the local area quite possibly from the 6th Century. The commune as such wasn't reported until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a substantially greater area than just the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be inserted prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the ensuing decades and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has witnessed increased development in the recent past.
