Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to the era of the Romans, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it sits close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins picked up in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who introduced the market place during the 10th Century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were settling the local area most probably since the 6th Century. The village existing at this time is not documented till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a way wider area compared to the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name will probably have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be added prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing throughout the following generations and the coming of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a growing market town that's seen increased development in the past several years.
