Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the county border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated next to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins unearthed nearby show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who created the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities found reveal that they were residing in the neighbourhood quite possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement as such is not listed till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a considerably wider area than only the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be put in prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing over the coming generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town which has seen improved development in recent times.
