Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a historical past stretching back to Roman days, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it can be found close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, early relics and coins picked up in close proximity give proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were settling the vicinity possibly since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then is not referred to until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a substantially larger area than merely the town alone, and covered the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not applied before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger through the following years and the construction of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has seen accelerated development in modern times.
