Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays near the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins discovered in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were residing in the local area more than likely from the 6th Century. The village as it was then was not described until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a far bigger area than only the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not inserted till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the ensuing decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has witnessed increased development in current times.
