Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a historical past going back to Roman days, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins discovered nearby offer proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who introduced a market during the 10th Century, and relics unearthed show that they were dwelling in the area very likely since the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a much greater area than only the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the following generations and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the past few decades.
