The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a much bigger area than only the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not inserted prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it vital to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
