Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the county boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historic past going back to Roman days, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old relics and coinage found near by give evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts picked up show that they were settling the neighbourhood almost certainly since the 6th Century. The village as it was is not listed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a substantially wider area than simply the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't added on till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger during the coming generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town which has seen greater development in current times.
