Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a historical past going back to the era of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old relics and coins found near by give proof of this. The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who introduced a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered suggest that they were living in the area very likely from the sixth century. The settlement as such was not described till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a much greater area than only the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be added before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the following generations and the construction of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that has witnessed improved development in the past several years.
