Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historic past going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coinage found nearby give evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, went through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in around the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on suggest that they were inhabiting the locale quite likely from the 6th Century. The village as such is not observed till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a far larger area than simply the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not included prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the following generations and the coming of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town that has witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
