Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a story stretching back to Roman days, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is located near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early relics and coins stumbled upon in the area show proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used a market in around the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the region most probably from the 6th Century. The commune as such was not referred to until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a way wider area than simply the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be appended before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it important to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the following years and the arrival of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's seen improved development in current times.
