Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a past going back to the Roman period, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins stumbled on in close proximity give proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered indicate that they were settling the neighbourhood in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't cited until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a far bigger area than merely the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get added on till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it crucial to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
