Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage picked up near by show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts found suggest that they were dwelling in the locale possibly since the 6th Century. The village existing then wasn't documented until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a far larger area than merely the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not put in up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding through the ensuing years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town which has witnessed increased development in the past few decades.
