Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is near the border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins unearthed in the area offer evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered show that they were inhabiting the region in all likelihood from the sixth century. The village existing at that time was not observed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a far wider area than just the town itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name could possibly have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger throughout the coming years and the coming of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has witnessed improved development in the past several years.
