Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage extending back to Roman days, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins uncovered nearby offer proof of this. The historical Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market during the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the region most likely since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then is not observed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a lot bigger area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name may perhaps have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get put on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it important to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the coming generations and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town which has witnessed increased development in the last few years.
