Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the border between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found next to the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, went through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place in about the tenth century, and artefacts found show that they were inhabiting the locale most likely from the 6th Century. The commune as such is not discussed till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a lot greater area than just the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be included up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the succeeding generations and the coming of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has witnessed accelerated development in modern times.
