Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage going back to Roman days, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lies close to the Chilterns and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins stumbled on in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered show that they were staying in the local area in all likelihood since the sixth century. The village as it was isn't documented till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a way greater area than merely the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't added on before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the coming years and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town which has witnessed greater development in current times.
