Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lays next to the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage discovered in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now called the A5, went through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered suggest that they were staying in the neighbourhood perhaps from the 6th Century. The village as it was then isn't cited until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a far greater area than simply the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be included before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the following decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town which has seen accelerated development in current times.
