Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county border between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins unearthed in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts picked up suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood almost certainly from the 6th Century. The village as it was then was not discussed till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a way greater area than simply the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get put on prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the succeeding generations and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town that's seen greater development in recent years.
