Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to Roman days, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old relics and coinage unearthed in the area show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, went through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts found mean that they were settling the local area quite possibly from the 6th Century. The village as such is not listed till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a considerably wider area than only the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get put in before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the succeeding years and the building of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prospering market town that has seen increased development in the past few years.
