Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county border in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a past going back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it lays close to the Chilterns and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coins found nearby show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place in around the tenth century, and relics picked up suggest that they were residing in the local area in all probability since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then wasn't remarked upon until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a considerably wider area than simply the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be inserted until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the succeeding years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prospering market town that has witnessed improved development in the recent past.
