Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the border between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a history stretching back to Roman times, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there had been settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area offer proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts found show that they were dwelling in the local area quite possibly from the sixth century. The village as it was then is not documented until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a considerably bigger area compared to the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name will have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be applied until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the following decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town that has seen increased development in the past several years.
