Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to Roman days, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located close to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage picked up in the area offer evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were residing in the region quite likely from the sixth century. The village as such was not cited till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a far wider area than just the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't included prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the succeeding years and the building of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a booming market town which has witnessed increased development in the past few years.
