Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old artifacts and coins found in close proximity give evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed a market in about the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were settling the area quite possibly since the sixth century. The village existing at this time was not documented till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a considerably greater area than simply the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be appended till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it crucial to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the succeeding years and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has seen increased development in the past few decades.
