Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lies near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins found in close proximity give proof of this. The historical Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, went through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were settling the area almost certainly from the sixth century. The village as it was then is not described till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a far wider area than just the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't put in until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding through the following years and the development of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that's seen accelerated development in the last few years.
