Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a history extending back to the Roman period, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits near the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins uncovered in the area offer evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who were using the market place in around the tenth century, and antiquities found suggest that they were residing in the region in all probability since the 6th Century. The commune as it was isn't reported till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a significantly greater area than merely the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name will have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be appended up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the coming decades and the development of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's witnessed improved development in the past few years.
