Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the days of the Romans, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coinage unearthed in the area give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were settling the area more than likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was was not referred to till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a much larger area compared to the town itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get inserted prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding over the following decades and the development of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has witnessed increased development in modern times.
