Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is near the border in between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies very close to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage found in the area show evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and relics found suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood probably since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't discussed until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a far greater area than only the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get put on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the ensuing decades and the development of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the recent past.
