Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a history stretching back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early relics and coinage stumbled on in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market during the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon indicate that they were residing in the area most probably from the 6th Century. The village existing at that time is not documented till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a considerably bigger area than merely the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't applied till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
