Set within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman days, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there existed settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins discovered nearby show evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics uncovered show that they were staying in the region probably from the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not mentioned till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a much wider area than only the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't added up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the succeeding generations and the coming of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
