Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the border between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past going back to Roman days, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits very close to the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins unearthed in the area show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, came through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market during the 10th Century, and relics picked up show that they were inhabiting the local area quite likely since the sixth century. The commune as such was not remarked upon until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a significantly larger area than just the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be put in until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the succeeding decades and the building of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town which has witnessed improved development in recent times.
