Found in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman times, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage picked up in the area offer proof of this. The historic Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, came through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics discovered suggest that they were inhabiting the vicinity quite likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not discussed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a way bigger area than simply the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name may well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the ensuing years and the coming of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the past several years.
