Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman times, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is situated close to the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins picked up in the area show proof of this. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and relics picked up show that they were inhabiting the region more than likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was isn't referred to till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a significantly wider area compared to the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not appended until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the following years and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has witnessed increased development in the past few decades.
