Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it is placed near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical relics and coinage discovered near by show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts found show that they were settling the region most probably since the sixth century. The settlement as such was not referred to until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a substantially greater area than simply the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not put on till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
