Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a story harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it lays next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical relics and coins found in the area offer proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who introduced the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were settling the locale in all probability since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then isn't listed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a lot bigger area compared to the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be added on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the coming generations and the construction of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town that's witnessed increased development in recent years.
