Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a historical past stretching back to the days of the Romans, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is situated next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coinage discovered nearby offer proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were settling the local area very likely since the 6th Century. The commune existing then isn't reported till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a far bigger area than merely the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't inserted till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger throughout the coming decades and the construction of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has witnessed increased development in the recent past.
