Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the Roman period, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated next to the Chilterns and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed indicate that they were inhabiting the local area in all probability since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't reported until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a far greater area than simply the town itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will probably have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not applied prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the coming years and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town that has seen greater development in the past few decades.
