Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Set in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located near the Chilterns and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage picked up in close proximity show proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and relics found show that they were settling the neighbourhood undoubtedly since the sixth century. The settlement as such was not reported until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a significantly larger area than just the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be added up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the following years and the building of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop.
