Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a historical past harping back to Roman times, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it stands close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage discovered in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who introduced the market place during the tenth century, and relics discovered show that they were residing in the area very likely since the 6th Century. The commune existing then was not referred to until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a lot larger area than only the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name will have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get inserted prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the following decades and the establishing of of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has seen improved development in current times.
