Set within the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage uncovered nearby offer evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using a market during the 10th Century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were staying in the region probably from the 6th Century. The village existing at that time is not documented until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a way larger area than just the town alone, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could possibly have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be put on till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the succeeding generations and the building of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town that's seen increased development in the last few years.
