Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the border betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman days, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it stands close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins picked up near by show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who introduced the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered mean that they were inhabiting the region in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The commune as it was was not observed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a lot greater area than only the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the ensuing generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a blooming market town which has witnessed improved development in the past few years.
