Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the county boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a history extending back to the Roman period, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found near the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old relics and coins uncovered near by show evidence of this. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who created the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were living in the locale perhaps since the sixth century. The village as such was not reported till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a much larger area than just the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not included up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing during the succeeding years and the arrival of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has seen greater development in current times.
